Understanding Your
Medicare Options

Before selecting a plan, it’s important to understand the key differences between your choices—especially between Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) and Medicare Advantage. Many people mistakenly enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, believing it works like a Medicare Supplement plan—but they are not the same.

We’re here to help you navigate these options so you can make the best decision for your healthcare needs. Let’s find the right fit for you!

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) – Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health services.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) – Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) – Helps cover the cost of prescription medications and is available as a standalone plan or included in some Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Supplement Plans

A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to help cover out-of-pocket costs. Any provider that accepts Medicare will also accept a Medicare Supplement plan since they simply bill Medicare first. Medicare typically covers 80% of approved expenses, and your Supplement plan pays the remaining 20%.

It’s important to know that Medicare Supplement plans do NOT include prescription drug coverage (Part D). If you don’t enroll in a Part D plan (PDP) when first eligible, you may face a late enrollment penalty later on (with some exceptions).

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement plans do not change benefits from year to year—only the cost may increase over time.

Medicare Part D, also known as a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), helps cover the cost of prescription medications. These plans can be added to Original Medicare, certain Medicare Cost Plans, Medicare Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.

Each Medicare Part D plan has its own list of covered medications, known as a formulary. Most plans categorize drugs into different tiers, with each tier determining the cost of the medication. Lower-tier drugs typically cost less than those in higher tiers.

If a necessary medication is placed in a higher tier, but your doctor believes you need it instead of a lower-tier alternative, you or your doctor may request an exception to lower your copayment.

Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as Part C or MA Plans, offer an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are provided by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and are designed to simplify coverage by bundling multiple benefits into a single plan.

When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare, but your coverage is managed through the private insurer instead of the federal government. These plans combine Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) and often include Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) for added convenience. Many Medicare Advantage plans also offer extra benefits, such as vision, dental, hearing, and wellness programs.
